After steadily putting out a handful of songs over the past year, Los Angeles’ Wes Period finally released his new EP “Photosynthesis” last week. The 10-track effort includes earlier Lovelife-produced single “Highs & Lows,” as well as new tunes with production from Casperxb and Pinky And The Brain. Of the six proper tracks on the EP, the three stand-outs are “Hood Ornament,” “Greatest Hits,” and “The Rules,” each with a different vibe. The first has the makings to be a banger when dropped live, with production by Mystery Skulls that begins with a simple piano melody before building up with drum claps and synth, then exploding with a bass-heavy borderline-EDM surge. The second was produced by Supercookies, an airy beat that deploys a smorgasbord of sporadic percussion, and splits time with frequent collaborator Jez Dior as they trade off start-and-stop verses. “Rules,” produced by Heavytrackerz, however, is a chilled-out hazy and moody number that sounds like it’s washed in the color purple. Wes also directed and edited an EP-length music video for “Photosynthesis,” which you can view below, featuring images by @devontrunk and @iainthavinit. His debut album, “Late Bloomer,” is expected next year.
