Ears Wide Open: Bishop

The mystery behind Bishop was begging to be unraveled — who was this young songstress whose first single “Wild Horses” was galloping into the dusk of the Internet, seducing listeners by the thousands? There’s a simple explanation, really: Her birth name is, quite coincidentally, exactly the same as a bazillion-selling singer-songwriter who rose to prominence in the 1990s, and, well, wouldn’t that have been confusing? (Or necessitated invoking the phrase “no relation” in every single press missive.) So she has adopted as a nom de tune a shortened version of the name of the small Scottish town from which her family hails, Bishopbriggs. Born in London, Bishop was schooled in Tokyo and Hong Kong before matriculating to Los Angeles, where she was discovered singing in a small bar. She made “Wild Horses” (you might recognize it from an Acura commercial) with producers Mark Jackson and Ian Scott (Dorothy); it builds from a plaintive acoustic guitar song into trip-hop burner, with Bishop’s vocals smoldering all the way. Where there’s smoky, there’s fire. Expect more in 2016.
