Stream: The Bulls, ‘Prudence’

At the end of January, Anna Bulbrook of the Bulls hosts GIRLSCHOOL: Field Day Weekend, her very own all-female-fronted music fest at the Bootleg Theater. Inspired by the wonderful array of female musicians here in Los Angeles, the three-day event also serves as a response to the ever-present lack of females on festival lineups, a fact Bulbrook became all too familiar with in her nine years as a member of the Airborne Toxic Event. She says, “I felt called to do something purely positive for other women and with other women. … There are a lot of formidable female minds out there doing incredible things; we just want to highlight and give weight to the excellence we already see around us.” Perhaps if there was a more even spread across the board, there wouldn’t be a need to have these fests shouting ‘GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS!,’ but in the meantime, Bulbrook is hollering and we are happy to come listen.

In anticipation of the event, the Bulls, aka Bulbrook and bandmate Marc Sallis of the Duke Spirit, are releasing a new split-single this week. One side is a cover of “Alright” by Supergrass, and the other is “Prudence,” a song Bulbrook wrote about a girl she knows “who always seems to be running both towards and away from the finer things in life at the same time,” and we might all know, or once were, a similarly pseudo-glamorous 20-year-old chasing the dream life as it manifests itself. Eerily, sweetly, Bulbrook wrote the song while immersed in David Bowie. “Believe it or not, this was written when I was singing along to David Bowie every day, listening to his voice and trying to channel the smallest scrap of his spirit.” So the song hits a tender spot now.
