Here’s where being in L.A.’s tight community of musicians leads to some chance magic. Jesse Kivel of the bandKisses was working on a song with Michael David of Classixx, which Kivel was supposed to sing. Enter Sarah Chernoff of Superhumanoids, and the opportunity to get her pretty vocals on a track was too good to pass up. Four years and a few tracks later, the trio have collected enough material for a little album, which brings us to “Limits,” a four-song electropop EP out Feb. 5 on vinyl through Cascine Records. “We realized that we had good chemistry as a trio, writing and producing in a subtle, refined way,” says Kivel. Taking their time allowed the project to grow organically. “A relaxed and loose approach to the project, never settling until we have a great track has been one of the guiding principles.” Taking inspiration from an image shot by photographer friend David Kitz of a mountain range outside Tel Aviv, the band enlisted Thom Ulmerof to create an album cover based on the image, and Chernoff even flew to Israel to visit the gorgeous mountains, where they shot images for the release and a video for album track “Oh,” which should be unveiled soon.
