The title track from Hot As Sun’s new EP “Little Friend” marks another episode in singer Jamie Jackson’s dream sequence of mystery, desire and regret. To review, Jackson is continuing Hot As Sun, who released the full-length “Night Time Sound Desire” in 2013, without collaborator Deborah Stoll, who moved out east. The new release finds Jackson working with bandmate/lifemate Waz, guitarist Seth Kauffman (Lana Del Rey, Ray Lamontagne) and the production duo The Gifted (James Bairian and Louis Castle). The lilting “Little Friend” and its familiar chorus aren’t the only highlights on the five-song release. Besides the previously released single “I Can Feel Your Love,” the tracks “Never Be the Same” and “Am I Crazy” couple moody but restrained production with Jackson’s wistful vocals to create palpable drama. It’s thankfully never over-the-top, merely a high.
