In recent years, throwback soul man Mayer Hawthorne has been Mr. Collaboration. On his last solo album, 2013’s “Where Does This Door Go,” the man born Andrew Cohen worked with eight different producers; he then segued to two tag-team projects, Jaded Incorporated with 14K (which yielded the 2014 album “The Big Knock) and Tuxedo with Jake One (which yielded last year’s “Tuxedo”). Today, the Michigan native announced that his new solo album “Man About Town” would be out April 8, and it sounds as if he’s taken the DIY route. The backgrounder notes that he wrote every song, handled most of the production and played almost all of the instruments on the album. And what hath he wrought? The single “Love Like That,” released today, is shiny fruit off the Hall & Oates tree, with sweet, warm synths for that moment just before you hit the dimmer switch.
