Zachary Cole Smith made DIIV’s long-awaited sophomore album “Is the Is Are” himself, but on Monday night at the Echo, the music was an immersive, communal event. It was the first of a three-night stand in Echo Park by the Brooklyn band, whose new double-LP came out Feb. 2 via Captured Tracks and at 17 tracks and more than an hour in length is a joyride of bent, biting guitars and post-punk rhythms. After energetic sets from La Sera and the Parinoyds to open the night, the sold-out room ratcheted up the intensity when DIIV took the stage. With Smith saying little more than repeating the phrase “Hi, we are DIIV from New York,” the band played a set mixing songs from 2012’s “Oshin” with ones from the new album. The band returns to the Echo tonight and Wednesday.
