Ears Wide Open: Bloodboy

Bloodboy

This we know about Bloodboy: She is not a boy at all, but Lexie Papilion, a San Clemente native and former competitive surfer. She likes red, and has a fascination with blood. She had a cool uncle. And her first single as a would-be electro queen sounds nothing like those likable but skeletal confessionals on her old MySpace page. But such is the world of producer-driven pop — on her first single “Human Female,” Papilion works with Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Charli XCX, et al), who ratchets up the bombast to match her bold vocals, which compare favorably to a lot of A-listers and other newcomers such as Molly Moore. While the marketplace is teeming with slick pop singers who come in varying shades of bold and empowering, “Human Female” is a bloody impressive bit of heat.
