Ears Wide Open: Sure Sure

Once upon a time in an idyllic land called Los Angeles, there was an indie band called Jr., which made them easy to type but hard to Google. There also was a famous band named Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., which made them easy to confuse with a race-car driver. After a few laps, the famous band then changed their name to JR JR. Thus faced with an identity (if not existential) crisis, Jr. changed their name to (wink) Sure Sure. Got all that? So what to make of Sure Sure? The quartet — Charlie Glick, Kevin Farzad, Chris Beachy and Michael Coleman — make sophisticated, jazz-inflected pop with warm keys and tricky rhythmic changes that’s somewhere between today’s indie-pop and Steely Dan’s ’70s. Their latest single “New Biome” earned the band some nice exposure on Spotify’s newbies playlist, and they have more on the way. If there’s a god of concert bookings out there, he would surely have Sure Sure open for JR JR.
