Songwriter Tucker Tota and producer Patrick Hart describe their relationship as a “tech-inspired bromance.” They’re happy to have someone to talk to about building analog synths and their favorite plug-ins. And, this is funny, although the guys are neighbors, the bulk of their interaction occurs over email. “Just to be clear, we live in the same building but we make Bad Wave over the internet,” Hart says. “We’re like the Postal Service.” Following a few cool singles, including “Look Out” (Crazy Heart Records) and “Runaway,” the duo’s latest tune is “Extraordinary,” a jubilant, synth-laden, catchy piece of music that hides an ominous narrative in an upbeat melody. Someone gets dropped in the parking lot, then they are running, they’re screaming, and repeatedly get damaged during the chorus: “stretch you apart, extraordinary.” With a band named inspired by the Spanish phrase “mala onda,” which translates to ‘bad wave’ but means ‘bad vibes,’ it’s clear Tota and Hart relish the paradox. “We’re trying to spread good vibes through,” says Hart. Who doesn’t enjoy a little darkness in the light?
