One year ago next week, Paper Pilots turned heads by unveiling the pop gem “The Weather,” a mood-shifting articulation of their “California Britpop” sound. Today, the band — piloted by singer-songwriter Justin David Bocchieri — released the follow-up, the three-song EP “Automatic.” It includes “The Weather” and two new songs, with the jaunty title track melting a little bit of Hall & Oates’ blue-eyed soul into their sun-splashed pop. “Lovebird” is more an old-school power-pop jam that takes flight on an anxious bass line. Produced by Grammy-nominated Luke Tozour (Katy Perry, Adam Lambert, Jamie Cullum) and mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Paul Hicks, “Automatic” is out today.
