L.A. trio Komox makes outsized, emotional pop anthems out of synths, guitars, vocals and percussion. Joe Castillo makes art out of grains of sand. Komox and Castillo collaborate here in the video for “Dreaming Awake,” the title track of the second EP the trio has released in a year’s time, “Dreaming Awake, Vol. 2.” Castillo has gained renown with his live art performances, “SandStory,” which, as the name suggests, use sand as a medium. The visuals for “Dreaming Awake” see shapes morph from portraits to landscapes to objects and back again.

Komox, too, continues to transform. Singer-songwriter Bryce Soderberg, the bassist/vocalist for Lifehouse, started the project in 2012 when Lifehouse went on hiatus and he took the opportunity to explore pop songwriting. Even with Lifehouse rebooting, Soderberg has continued Komox with Pelle Hillstrom (guitarist in Allesandro Cortini’s ModwheelMood) and drummer Kris Persson, working with several producers before finally releasing the first EP last December. With songs ranging from danceable to balladry, Komox’s reference points are the electronic rockers who filled big theaters and stadiums in the ’80s.
