The Shelters put an exclamation point on a year during which they released their debut album, made their late-night TV debut, toured and supported the the band (Mudcrutch) fronted by their album’s co-producer (Tom Petty) with an electric hometown show Monday night at the Troubadour. They hit hard and played fast right out of the gate, opening with “Birdwatching,” mixing in an acoustic Kinks cover and playing “Rebel Heart” late in the set. Thoughout, they displayed the prodigious guitar skills that set them apart from their contemporaries.
Dear Boy’s set — at the first venue they played together in their current incarnation — kicked off the night in front of an already full room. Their big ’80s-inspired anthems and heavy but sweeping sound won the crowd immediately, with the set including the new song “Cold Spell,” the debut of an even newer song “Die,” tunes from their “Parts of a Flower” EP and older favorites such as “Hesitation Waltz.”
