Jay Som — the musical vehicle for 22-year-old Melina Duterte and friends — led a sold-out crowd at the Echo through a Friday night of blissful peaks and valleys playing the album-release show for her acclaimed “Everybody Works.” There were lighter moments, like band members trading hats between songs (at one moment, upon not rotating headwear, a crowd member shouted “Switch hats!” and they did). And there were mellower moments, as during the song “Slow,” when the crowd was hushed. “You guys are so quiet,” Duterte said, “but I like it.” Jay Som ended up playing five songs off the new album, which came out last month, and four from 2016’s “Turn Into.” Said Duterte: I love L.A. and its so good to be back. Thanks for being here and not at Coachella.”
Kera & the Lesbians and Pinky Pinky opened the night.
Jay Som setlist: Ghost, Everybody Works, Forget About It Kid, Our Red Door, One More Time Please, Slow, Unlimited Touch, Take It, The Bus Song, Baybee, I Think You’re Alright.
