Beyond playing lead guitar and Moog for psychedelic prog rock band Astra, Escondido-born Brian Ellis has played an indelible role in the modern funk scene, collaborating with artists like XL Middleton, Zackey Force Funk, Egyptian Lover, Howard Johnson and many more, but also through his own records, which he’s been releasing since 2007. The man can, and does, play everything. His newest album, “Mirror/Mirror,” arrives May 19 via Chit Chat Records. He sang, played, mixed, and produced every last note on it, blending 1970s album rock with 1980s funk and what he describes as “obscure French library music.” The first single, “Nice Surprise” describes a late night romantic connection and how, despite the ensuing hangover and the fleeting nature of love, it’s all worthwhile because, as he sings, “to feel the best, you’ve got to live the worst.”
