Singer, songwriter and producer Justin Warfield probably raised a few eyebrows in 2016 when — amid the warmly received 10-year anniversary shows by She Wants Revenge — he debuted music from his new group Dream Club. After all, the music could hardly be any more different. While She Wants Revenge revived the noir-ish ’80s in the mid-Aughts, Dream Club nods to the classic, guitar-driven California rock and its spawn. Warfield is clearly having a blast here, fronting a quint that includes childhood pal Gianni Garofalo, his wife Stefanie King-Warfield, Justin “Dusty” Rocherolle and Jamie Arentzen, all of whom have credits with a host of L.A. bands. The new year has seen Dream Club release two new singles, “California Dreams or the Head-Trip Scene” and “To Play Us Out.” The latter plays Pink Floyd expansiveness off Arentzen’s vicious riffs; the former gallops through the past amid some nifty husband-wife harmonies, lamenting the false promise of the Golden State. Not hard to imagine that one turned up loud, and sung ironically, on a top-down drive up the PCH. Dream Club’s full-length album will be out later this year.
