Alex Ebert knows how guys can talk and act tough, and how that’s often just static. Today the frontman of Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros released a new single, “Broken Record,” his first solo venture since the full-length “Alexander” in 2011. It’s a tender, horn-accented and little-bit-glitchy confessional in which Ebert, as he only can, he makes declarations like “I be like so dumb and stuff” seem like poetry. “This song ‘Broken Record’ is the first of a whole thing. Not an album. An adventure. I’m leaning out. I can’t speak for other people right now. Just myself,” says Ebert, the L.A.-bred musician who now makes his home in New Orleans. “Once in a while enough heartache piles up and you get that tender electric. And that wide-open space is that terribly alive shit. Terribly alive. And that’s that ocean I love best. That’s that adventure. That’s that void-blown, step-blind trust.” Kevin Circosta shot the visuals for the song, which Ebert says is the first of 20-plus new tunes he has in the works.
