Shannon Hurley has been plying her piano-driven earnestness for a decade, her music orbiting the Fiona Apple/Tori Amos/Aimee Mann stars and her songs finding their way onto myriad television shows. “New Day,” out June 30, will be Hurley’s fifth full-length — in addition to two albums she released with Lovers & Poets, the duo with her husband, Ben Eisen. There’s not a lot of glossy production in what Hurley does, nor any manufactured, Lana Del Rey-like air of mystery, just her effortlessly melodic directness. The single “Number One” is a simple affirmation that romantically she’s in it for the long haul; it features Eisen on bass and Fernando Perdomo on guitar, drums and backing vocals. The album also includes a cover of the 1988 Pogues/Kirsty MacColl collaboration “Fairytale of New York.”
