Kate Ellwanger wears a lot of hats, and all of them fit. The studio dynamo sings, writes, produces and plays multiple instruments, and those skills are on full display on her debut album as DOT. “Retrofuture,” just out via her female-centric label Unspeakable Records, is a mesmerizing, glacier-cool slab of down-tempo pop. Bring your own mood lighting. DOT, also a beatmaker for the L.A. collective Team Supreme, works in soft but precise brushstrokes on “Retrofuture:” The single “Gravity” defies its title; DOT feels but inches away from your ear on “Modern Romance;” “Let Go” suggests watching a party, only in the reflection of a pool; and “Amnesia,” with its genteel guitar, is the sonic equivalent of a mind trying ever so hard to remember. Fellow Team Supreme compatriot Jnthn Stein appears on a couple of tracks, but overall “Retrofuture” is DOT’s connection, and a strong one it is.
