Legendary Los Angeles DJ Rodney Bingenheimer has announced he is leaving his radio home for more than four decades, KROQ-FM.
According to a post on the Facebook page for his radio show “Rodney on the Roq,” Bingenheimer, 69, said his final show would air June 4-5 (midnight to 3 a.m.). He went on to write:
It has been an amazing run, and I will be thanking all of you when I say goodbye to KROQ next week. I am planning on some special callers and special music as I say a proper goodbye.
As this chapter closes, I will be opening another chapter of my rock life soon. I may be done with KROQ, but I am not retiring.
I hope you continue to join me on that journey. I have the greatest fans of all time and you’ve made my time at KROQ a fantastic one.
Bingenheimer’s legacy dates to the 1960s, when he became a scenester on the Sunset Strip, forging friendships with several prominent artists. He worked as a publicist and record label intern, moved to the U.K. for a few years and when he returned to L.A. ran a club, Rodney’s English Disco, on the Sunset Strip. His show launched on KROQ in August, 1976, and over the years “The Mayor of the Sunset Strip,” as he became known, was credited with having helped scores of artists gain fame.
In 2003, he was the subject of the documentary “Mayor of the Sunset Strip.”
