Juan Velasquez formed Roses with Marc Steinberg and Victor Herrera when his former punk band, Abe Vigoda, broke up in 2014, releasing their first EP, “Dreamlover,” that same year via Group Tightener. A few singles followed, leading up to the band’s debut full-length, “Camera Trouble,” which came out on Group Tightener and Danger Collective last October. Produced by Alex Degroot of Zola Jesus, the trio make their comment on modern life, pairing their brooding analysis with catchy melodic synth, guitar and drum machine-driven pop. Velasquez describes the video for “Julian March” as “a colorful fever-dream in a hell where a woman is forced to sell useless products to an unseen audience.” Directed by Drew Tobia (“See You Next Tuesday”) and staring Kate Berlant (Netflix’s “The Characters”), that’s exactly what we get. It’s a cute and darkly funny experience. And it’s very cool when the mini-shopping cart magically melts.
