L.A. underground hip-hop icon 2Mex has announced his first new solo album in nearly seven years, “Lospital,” out Aug. 15 on Water the Plants. The Project Blowed veteran, KDAY radio host and co-founder of The Visionaries suffered a serious scare with diabetes that almost killed him and led to the amputation of half his leg last year. The new album reflects the roller-coaster of difficult emotions endured during his road to recovery. Alejandro Ocana Jr. raps about depression, doubt, suicide and the political climate that makes life nearly impossible for so many, but a through-line of love transcends all the suffering. Ocana’s legacy in local hip-hop has earned him respect, and he continues to push forward with “Lospital,” the title track and second single to emerge from the new record. The song begins with guitar, strings, and a folky chorus sung by local artist Sophia Pfister. Then the beat drops and Ocana begins his verse, sharing his struggle to find happiness and meaning in life. It’s very honest and cuts to the core, but ultimately the message is positive, and reminds us that we need each other through life’s biggest challenges.
