To paint with a broad brush, the music released so far by New Mystics deals with life’s greatest tragedy: how the innocence of youth is ravaged by the realities of adulthood. New Mystics’ new video for “Modern” stars the same young boy who appeared, submerged in water, in their first video, “Sparrows.” Here, the Dan Huiting-directed narrative finds the lad (also found being forced to smile on the cover of the forthcoming album “Smile With Your Teeth”) retreating into his own dream world while his mother — a junkie — slips into hers. It’s powerful stuff and the latest from L.A.-based Josh Onstott, the multi-instrumentalist from Other Lives and the man behind New Mystics.

In late June, New Mystics unveiled the latest song from the album, “Rebels,” at atmospheric meditation that restrains its inherent bleakness with a beautiful piano line and ragged guitar riffs. “There’s no future to hold,” Onstott sings, and we can only hope against hope that he is wrong. “Smile With Your Teeth” is out Aug. 18.
