NONA

Michael Goldman embarked on his solo project NONA quietly back in 2012, writing some acoustic songs after the band for which he’d played bass, Chasing Kings, went into limbo because frontman Matthew Schwartz signed on with Cold War Kids. Goldman has juggled his own songwriting in between duties as a touring bassist for the likes of Goldroom, the Moth & the Flame and Meg Myers, last year releasing the sparkling single “Otherways,” the title track to a five-song EP he has finished. This week comes “Father’s Day,” a poignant mid-tempo rocker with cascading guitars and a brief, clenched-teeth solo to underline the song’s underlying wish: that he be a better man than his father. There are more goodies in Goldman’s guitar, but for now this one’s a keeper.
