LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy only skips one break-neck beat before lamenting the seemingly fatalistic themes found in mainstream pop music with “Tonite.” The dance-floor banger is the third single released from LCD’s comeback album “American Dream,” out Sept. 1, and the best so far. Decrying the cognitive dissonance people feel as they age is certainly not a new theme for Murphy, but it’s relatable with his declaration that “life is finite / but shit, it feels like forever.”

Director Joel Kefali’s video for “Tonite” is an unmistakable homage to the 1980s (speaking of forever), featuring a hazy glow and the band revolving on a circular stage, going through the motions as the 47-year-old Murphy proselytizes. The suggestion made here makes slightly more sense than the alleged one between the album cover and the cover of “Infinite Jest.” It’s this sense of nostalgia LCD’s fans have grown to embrace as they dance their way toward retirement. and back again.
