Something was brewing Thursday night at Levitt Pavilion MacArthur Park, and though it wasn’t witchcraft, it was witchy. L.A. trio L.A. Witch, performing in the shadows in front of Astral Violet’s liquid light show, celebrated the release of their debut album a week early (it’s out Sept. 8 but was available here) with a beguiling 45-minute set. The show was part of the summer’s free concert series at the bandshell, and the overly warm August night did not keep the crowds away. Frankie and the Witch Fingers, whose own new album arrived Sept. 15 (with a show that night to celebrate it), preceded the headliners, playing in front of a row of old TVs that played colorful, distorted loops from VCR players, as well as a live feed from a video camera.
