Los Angeles crowds continued their love affair Friday night with the Shins, who headlined the sold-out Greek Theatre in what was their fourth Southern California appearance of the year. About a third of the Shins’ set was gleaned from their fifth album, “Heartworms, which was their first in five years and released in March.
Main man James Mercer kept the energy high most of the night, and even though it dragged a bit mid-set, he got the crowd back into it after “Painting a Hole.” “We’re gonna do a party jam right now,” he declared “a kick-ass party jam …” And the band went into a cover of the Outfield’s “Your Love,” which they morphed into their own “Turn a Square” (2003) and then back into the cover.
Day Wave and Foxygen opened the night.
Setlist: Caring Is Creepy, Australia, Name for You, Kissing the Lipless, Mine’s Not a High Horse, Cherry Hearts, Gone for Good, Mildenhall, Saint Simon, Painting a Hole, Your Love (The Outfield cover)/Turn a Square, Phantom Limb, Simple Song. Encore: The Fear, New Slang, Sleeping Lessons
