“I think my heroes would hate me,” singer Emily Gold proclaims in “Even If I Tried,” unveiling her fear of succumbing to playing the game of false pretenses. The song is the latest rocker from Gold’s new quartet Velvet, whose music recalls a time when a little dose of self-loathing, or at least self-scrutiny, made for heady catharsis. Especially when the volume’s all the way up. To review: After releasing a solo album in 2015, Gold graduated to full-band project, and the new single, produced by Neil Wogensen (of Valley Queen), features Salvatore Romano on drums, Zach Bilson on bass and Max Ratzky on lead guitar. “Even If I Tried” follows this summer’s lead-off single “How Do You Know” and will be featured on Velvet’s debut EP, “Nice To Meat You,” slated for a March release. Until then, keep things loud.
