L.A. trio DWNTWN found their sweet spot on their full-length debut, “Racing Time,” released this summer — a sonic place less reliant on the synths that populated their 2012 and 2014 EPs and more on a bed of guitar fuzz to support Jamie Leffler’s feathery vocals. With cohorts Robert Cepeda and Daniel Vanchieri, Leffler explores relationships, loss (especially the death of her father, former Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ bassist Howie Epstein, who died when she was 14) and coming of age. Or, in the case of the meditation “Lonely,” find the right pace to come of age. “A storm is brewing in my mind / I’m racing time, racing time,” Leffler sings as if she knows it’s a futile competition. Director Sean Hollihan’s straightforward video casts the band in blue hues and wraps them up in effects.
