“Little Dark Age,” MGMT‘s first album in almost five years, will finally be unleashed this Friday, Feb. 9, via Columbia Records. With their latest music video, the band reveals just how weird their underpinnings are, even and especially with a song as inconspicuous as the ’80s-inspired bromantic ballad, “Me and Michael.”
Directed by Joey Frank and Randy Lee Maitland, the video stars Ben Goldwasser and fudge-eating Andrew VanWyngarden as MGMT in an altered reality where phones are fleshy and certain things are made of cardboard. They steal a song they find on the internet by Filipino band Truefaith and it becomes a huge hit. But their plagiarism is discovered and their careers are destroyed. Then there’s some weird stuff with gelatin. In an amusingly meta twist of events, Truefaith is a real band from the Philippines, and they recorded their own version of the song, “Ako at si Michael,” for MGMT’s video. Apparently there’s also a Russian version …
