Barrie Rose’s technicolor world is probably best encapsulated by the title of her 2016 album: “Dreamz Come True and Love Is Real.” The singer-songwriter, once of the bands Races and Tes Elations, imbues her quirky indie-pop with an untiring buoyancy, which for her is a state of mind that can be achieved through music or meditation or both. “I want to inspire others to recognize their own inherent brilliance,” she says in introducing her new single “Matter of Time,” which she says “has many themes — one is the idea of being on a journey towards attaining your dreams, but having fun during the whole process.”
Over synths that sigh and coo, Rose simply lets the song happen almost spontaneously. “When Scott [Barber] and I were in the studio, we got inspired to record me doing patty-cake claps, the click sound of the cap on my thermos, dropping coins and a stick pattern on a wooden stool as percussion elements,” she says. “These sounds viscerally illustrate what it’s like to be a wide-eyed kid in a world where anything is possible, which is pretty much how I feel these days.”
Let your inner kid out.
