On his new album, “Concrete and Mud,” coming out March 30, Sam Morrow wanted to capture the energy of his rockin’ band while experimenting with some fun techniques in the studio. Working again with producer/engineer Eric Corne, who runs Forty Below Records and has put out all three of Morrow’s albums since 2014, the guys recorded on a vintage Neve 8068 console to get that beautiful classic sound. Some fun was had running Wurlitzers through phaser pedals, recording farfisa organs through revolving Leslie speaker cabinets and even a mini-Moog makes an appearance, alongside fiddle, dobro, mandolin and timpani. Embracing the melting pot of country, the songs bridge West Coast Americana and Southern rock with plenty of twang, stomp and funky honky-tonk to get the listener riled up.

Written by Corne, the latest single, “Skinny Elvis,” was inspired by a friend’s catch-phrase, who says “That’s skinny Elvis, all day long” when describing something as cool. Fellow L.A. country girl Jaime Wyatt joins Morrow on this vocal duet, and handling the pedal steel is Jay Dee Maness, who notably performed with Gram Parsons and The Byrds on “Sweetheart of the Rodeo,” among many other great recordings.
