It took 12 years for Lucas MacFadden to release a Cut Chemist album worthy of following 2006’s excellent “The Audience’s Listening.” To push himself forward as an artist, the turntable magician decided that this time around he wanted to rely less on sampling and explore a wider territory of genres by collaborating with other musicians, singers and rappers. “This is the death of a musical identity and the birth of another,” MacFadden says. Out now on A Stable Sound, “Die Cut” includes collaborations with the Mars Volta’s Deantoni Parks, Biz Markie, actress Erika Christensen (“Parenthood”), Tune-Yards, Farmer Dave Scher, Dexter Story, Chali 2na, Hymnal and Laura Darlington, whose gentle voice graces the latest single, “Home Away from Home.” The video, directed by Govind Rae and featuring Poppy Miller (who also choreographed), is about “a young woman and a beetle who share a bond during what may be the end or beginning of a desolate and beautiful world.”
