Video premiere: Children, ‘True Believer’

As they did on their 2015 album “Great River,” L.A. quintet Children aim high — conceptually and musically — on their new single “True Believer.” The song, from their second full-length, “It’s Okay to Die,” is an enthralling, slightly funky psychedelic jam that reveals a band whose music, while rooted in the past, doesn’t settle for merely aping it. “True Believer” invites the listener to another dimension — arriving with an exclamation point (and Floydian guitar solo) at the 3:50 mark.
And speaking of other dimensions, director Brandon Villalovos’ sun-baked video for “True Believer” vividly drives home the notion that friends and lovers remain together once they depart this mortal coil. It stars Bre Maughan and Ronis Aba, along with the band’s singer-guitarist Gil Thomas, as they find themselves awakened in a desert oasis.
The band — Thomas, along with Jeff Steiskal, Graham Walker, Trevor Wallace and Mark Yates — will release “It’s Okay to Die” this Friday.
