Ears Wide Open: Cape Weather

New L.A. duo Cape Weather is a collaboration between Natalie Smith and Eric Jackowitz, who arrive in two shades of languorous with the single “Telephono” and its alter ego “Telephone.” The songs have the same skeleton but different skin, both lamenting a partner fixated on a certain device. It’s lounge music for a relationship that’s been left out in the sun too long.
Singer Smith, who has released music as a solo artist, and producer Jackowitz, the drummer for Nick Waterhouse, worked with a host of contributors on the singles they have made for local label Future Gods, including Ben Alleman (Ryan Adams’ keyboardist), producer/composer Erik Groysman, Joe Berry (M83’s saxophonist) and Andrew Sarlo (producer for Big Thief and Nick Hakim).
The duo says the inspiration for “Telephono” came from the vibe of the song “Spooky” by Dusty Springfield. As for the Jackowitz-directed video, it’s a Tour de L.A., with an eye for the city’s architecture. In black and white, it’s kind of spooky, too.
