Following last September’s full-length, “Plum,” Wand’s new EP, “Perfume,” aims to activate the nose, where memories, feelings and future projections are stored. Out May 25 on Drag City, these seven songs were recorded in Grass Valley, by Tim Green, then mixed in Woodstock, N.Y. by Daniel James Goodwin. For the “Pure Romance” video, Cory Hanson captured his band — Sofia Arreguin, Evan Burrows, Robbie Cody and Lee Landey — their van and a dog traipsing around some otherworldly desert landscapes, implementing a throwback aesthetic meant to conjure 1990s late night MTV. It’s the softer side of Wand, more baroque than psychedelic, but with plenty of galactic interplay between guitar and keys to pick at between cymbal smashes.
By the way, looking up the terms “wand” and “pure romance” on the internet will yield some funny results.
