“Country Mind,” the new single from folk singer Paige Calico, sneaks up on you like a wisp of smoke from down the canyon — either a memory of someplace you’ve been or a hint of someplace you’re going. If the wistful lilt in the New Jersey native’s voice, along with vaporous guitar, reveals her uncertain emotional geography, so does the video from director Ethan DeLorenzo.
“I wanted to create a video based on translations and opposites, which sums up ‘Country Mind,’” Calico says. “I often struggle with feeling like I’m meant to be in another place than I am. Especially when it comes to country vs. city life. The contrast of Vashon Island in Washington state and Seattle felt like a perfect fit for just that. Ending on ‘dreaming of what could be won’t change the fate of time’ — no matter where you choose to be, there you are, and there’s your pal fate unraveling as it will regardless. Life is really just about learning to be happy with wherever you find yourself with whatever you have. Acceptance.”
“Country Mind” is the second single the singer-songwriter has released since her 2016 EP “Crying Diamonds,” which was imbued with sense of wanderlust. Formerly one-half of the folk duo the Dwells (who released albums in 2012 and ’13 and toured tirelessly in a Chevy Coachman), Calico eventually moved to L.A. to work with renowned photographer Henry Diltz. Musically, she found herself last year working with producer Yay Blynn (aka J. Blynn of Motor Sales and, previously, Harper Blynn).
