L.A. locals Lucas Fitzsimons and Ryan Foster — aka the Molochs — weren’t in a rush to release another album after touring around the world with their second album “America’s Velvet Glory” last year. But being the natural songwriters they are, the experience sparked moments of inspiration and they kept a notebook, pen and guitar close to their side through endless rides in planes, trains and automobiles. By December, they had enough songs fleshed out to head back into Long Beach’s Jazzcats studio for their third album, “Flowers in the Spring,” out on Sept. 7 via Innovative Leisure.

The first single, “I Wanna Say to You,” sees the duo grow deeper into their Madchester indie roots with their jangly pop still grooving but the vintage chip on their shoulder updated from the ’70s to the ’90s with a more Stone Roses-Oasis tone and a hip-hop drum beat. Taking more time for such things as string arrangements on this album, Fitzsimmons says that they haven’t gone soft or slack, though, “People go, ‘Wow, it sounds more mature.’ What kind of boring shit is that?” Perhaps with a little world experience, they’ve just become more assertive with their observations with lyrics like, “There’s somethin’ I wanna say to you / You try so hard just to get it right when you’re lying alone in the middle of the night / There’s no one around to listen to your lies… I need you to get far away from me right now / and go do what you want to it’s your life now, may not always be free, so don’t ask me how / There’s no one around to listen to your lies / It’s just you and only you.” Assertions may spread that the Molochs aren’t going to be afraid to say exactly what they think on this upcoming album.
