Ears Wide Open: Polyplastic

Polyplastic is singer-guitarist Charlie Ellis and bassist Emily Ibarra. Along with drummer Casey Baird and guitarist Dylan Bostick, the group create post-punk music that some say is for dancing but could also suit bouncy sulking in a dark corner of the bar. Well, that might work while “Next Slide” is playing, but “Descension” is way too upbeat to frown at. Ellis’s interest in industrial music actually stems from working with metal, having spent time working as a welder in Philadelphia.

On June 29, the band released their EP, “Not No,” where they traverse several tempos and moods in just under 15 minutes. They’ve released a few singles over the last year leading up to the EP, so there’s at least 30 minutes of Polyplastic floating around for consumption, a combination of grinding guitar and frisky rhythm section that brace Ellis’s melodic chops. “‘Not No’ is about movement versus idleness,” says Ellis. “Most of the lyrical content is representative of the constant traveling I did over the past few years and a coming to terms with being settled back home in LA. We recorded the EP and it’s b-sides throughout 2017/2018 and I see it as a document of our nascent year of playing shows and touring as a band.”
