Big Dipper

Chicago-born rapper Big Dipper emerged in 2011 with “Drip Drop,” a song that put a raunchy spin on a sample from the “Bambi” soundtrack. He then spent some time in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles. From the looks of his new video, “Why We Can’t,” California weather is great for a guy who enjoys flaunting his hairy bear-bod. The video for last month’s single, “Lookin,” is even fleshier. The rapper will release his first full length album, “Late Bloomer,” this August, but there’s plenty of juicy material floating around the internet, such as “La Croix Boi” where he professes his love of sparkling water, or “Meat Quotient”  where he’s a hungry Boy Scout. He’s also portrayed a banana in “Chunkita” and a mermaid in “Vibin.”

“Late Bloomer” promises “sex-positive thot anthems” and “some club tracks to really dance to,” but also “more introspective and emotional” songs, says the artist. First single “Why We Can’t” is one of the more vulnerable tracks where he raps about a break-up, and features an appearance from Brooklyn friend and collaborator Rena. The video is more low-key than many of his exploits. “I’d been toying with the idea of making a low-budget video with a simple concept that really focused on the message and idea of the song,” says Dipper. “I feel like the video is really open and honest and vulnerable … not hiding behind big fashion or art direction statements or gimmicks and tricks. The song is about coming clean with yourself, owning your truth, and I feel like the video expresses that.”
