It’s the most roundabout reminder to be kind that we’ve heard in a while. “Nobody tells you it hurts to be loved,” Barry Johnson sings on Joyce Manor’s new single, “Million Dollars to Kill Me.”
It’s the title track to the South Bay standouts’ forthcoming fifth album, out Sept. 21 via Epitaph Records. If 2016’s “Cody” was the quartet’s coming-of-age record, this one finds Johnson and bandmates Chase Knobbe, Matt Ebert and Pat Ware (the band’s new drummer) wrestling with grown-up stuff, they say. “Million Dollars to Kill Me” was produced by Kurt Ballou of Converge at his studio is Salem, Mass.
