The geography, both physical and emotional, in which he creates continues to inspire the music Aaron Valenzuela produces as Harriet Brown. Where last year’s “Contact” revolved around the songs he wrote during his transition from San Francisco to L.A. and the search for connection with others, Valenzuela’s new material reflects his experience since settling in Los Angeles over the past few years, and certain feelings of anxiety and paranoia that may or may not be real, but are brought on by the new surroundings. “‘Bag Away’ is the struggle of acknowledging paranoia,” says Valenzuela, “like being in a room full of people I’m uncomfortable with and feeling a lot of anxiety, knowing that I probably don’t have to feel that way, but I still do, because maybe everyone is staring at me.” So maybe now there’s too much connection? The five-and-a-half minute track’s meditative R&B pace serves as the vessel for self-reflection with a sway. A new album is forthcoming on Innovative Leisure.
