Space Babies

The spirit of the ’60s flower children blooms in the music of Space Babies, a veteran crew whose tribal psychedelia is inspired by nature, human evolution, Ancient Future and outer space. They’re the kind of folks who could only hail from Venice Beach (they do), who might feel compelled to name their recording space Earthstar Creation Center (they did) and who might slip “far out,” “groovy” and “outta sight!” into casual conversation without a drop of irony.

The core players — Michael and Rebecca Vest, Farmer Dave Scher and John X Volaitis — count an exhaustive list of credits among them, having been in or toured with a host of bands. They’ve made three albums together and, as you’d intuit from their playful demeanor in the simple studio video for their immaculately played ’60s-styled jam “Hello Baby,” mean every piece on peace and love. The video grew from Space Babies’ six-part, documentary-style series “The Space Babies Show: A Song in a Day,” which follows them through their creative process. Jam out a little bit and celebrate a group who’ve had no weeds encroach on their karmic garden.
