Since their 2016 EP release, “Ouroboros,” L.A. duo Smoke Season have teased fans with some tasty indie-pop hits such as “Good Days” and “Sweetest Thing.” Gabby Wortman and Jason Rosen are back at it with their latest release, “Hot Damn,” which is just as the title might suggest — a sultry and soulful stimulant for your libido. Add your own sweat.
“‘Hot Damn’ is about your lust hitting a fever pitch during a wet, hot American summer,” Rosen says. “We wrote the song in less than an hour and based the melodies around two vocal samples that Gabby roughly recorded and effected — a pitched-up ‘hot damn’ and pitched-down ‘baby.’ We loved the rough nature of the samples and ended up using the originals in every chorus. We drew inspiration from ‘The Sandlot,’ OutKast and Franki Valli and the Four Seasons when writing this song.”
The song chooses a heavy synth sound, with some guitar picking and horns blowing during the chorus. “Hot Damn” is fun and catchy, showcasing the range of Wortman’s vocals as she lets her soulful side come forward as well as a wailing saxophone solo to close the track.
