Despite the weather in Los Angeles finally getting down to chilly, eager fans were wrapped around the block outside the Wiltern on Sunday night to catch Houston’s Khruangbin on the latest stop of their North American tour. In their usual flashy attire and jet-black wigs, members Donald “DJ” Johnson (drums, no wig), Laura Lee (bass), and Mark Speer (guitar) came on stage one by one to an eruption of cheers and immediately bathed the crowd in their “Thai funk” hits. Most of the ecstatic crowd quickly got moving, dancing non-stop through their set, almost as if instructed by the powerful trio onstage. The only reason more people weren’t grooving along was because Khruangbin sold out the Wiltern, and the place was packed to the brim with fans eager to get their funk-rock fill. The band left the stage with a quick “Thank you!” not long after their medley of covers — including songs from artists such as Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Sade and many more — and were met with a deafening plead from the crowd for an encore. Once they returned, they immediately got back in the groove for a couple songs before being joined by opener Will Van Horn on his pedal steel guitar for the last two songs.
