Ears Wide Open: Half Alive

Half Alive (rendered half•alive) is the Long Beach trio of Josh Taylor, Brett Kramer and J Tyler Johnson, whose nimble electro-pop — just four songs so far — has been gobbled up faster than free ice cream in park full of kids. The band’s online success has been fueled in part by (stop us if you’ve heard this before) a nifty, one-shot, choreographed video for their 2018 single “Still Feel.”
The project had its roots with Taylor, who formerly fronted the Long Beach band the Moderates. Challenged by a mentor to get serious about his songwriting, he embarked on a mission to pen 50 of them. Afterward, he set about whittling his work down to a select few, and working with producer James Krausse (Grammy-nominated in 2014 for his work with Beyoncé), Half Alive had the EP “3,” released in 2017. The unfailingly catchy single “Still Feel” followed this past August.
The new year holds a lot of promise for the trio — their shows In Los Angeles, New York and Chicago have quickly sold out.
