Video: Tamaryn, ‘Angels of Sweat’

New Zealand-born, L.A.-based singer-songwriter Tamaryn’s new album, “Dreaming The Dark” hits digital shelves this Friday. Produced and co-written by her frequent collaborator, the preternaturally gloomy Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Frankie Rose, Wild Nothing, Gang Gang Dance), “Dreaming The Dark” marks her first release since 2015’s “Cranekiss.” While most might remember the gaussian blur of guitars that saturated “Cranekiss,” “Dreaming The Dark” marks a significant creative departure, permeated with arch ’80s synth-pop stylings, lucent beats and shamelessly dramatic vocals — elements reminiscent of her collaboration on the title-track of Elbrecht’s 2018 release, “Here Lies.”

“Angels of Sweat” comes as the second part of Tamaryn’s self-directed series of ‘archetype dramas,’ preceded by her January release and video for “Fits of Rage.” In her role as The Moon, Tamaryn seeks to be “the biggest diva in the sky,” as she confuses Death and The Major Arcana who surround her. Despite its DIY aesthetic the video conjures an ethereal aura that matches Tamaryn’s auditory dabbling in the melodramatic gauze that typified Cocteau Twins. Unabashedly ’80s, the synth-pop ballad soars to mythic heights with the refrain, “Embrace your desire / lived so many lives / it’s already night.”
