Stream: Hank Fontaine, ‘Bad Love’

The first solo single from Hank Fontaine is completely relatable — not just because it’s about a relationship gone sour, but because it was inspired by that time-honored battle between man and grocery shopping.
“‘Bad Love’ was written in the parking lot of a Trader Joe’s and is actually about someone else rudely cutting me off to steal a parking space,” Fontaine says. “I was so shocked (and pissed) that I wrote the whole song as an iPhone note right there in less time than it takes to listen to it. I had a Jerry Seinfeld-type voice happening in my head at the time: ‘Who IS this person?!?’”
Fontaine, of course, was one-half of the sibling duo the Fontaines, who called it quits last summer after four years and having released a slew of EPs and singles. He recently toured in Dylan Gardner’s band and for his solo project has been working with Jason DeMayo of Street Joy.
“I’ll take the high road,” Fontaine sings in “Bad Love,” a sweetly sad psych-pop tune highlighted by his nifty guitar work. Knowing its origination story, though, it’s hard not to chuckle when he tenderly asks, “Were you a child treated badly?:”
