Last year, Jimmy Sweet put his “romance rock” project Lady Low in his rear-view mirror and set about releasing music under his own name. He’s still much the same singer — the nightclub crooner vying for all the ladies’ attention. Only backed by a full band and string players, it’s easy to capture everybody’s fancy.
A veteran performer in such acts as Rolan Bolan, Richmond Sluts and Hot Hot Heat, Sweet on June 7 will release his first single of this year, “The Pills.” “It’s by far the most ambitious I’ve gotten yet,” he says of the tune that features string arrangements by Kaitlin Wolfberg. He adds with a wink: “The chord progression of the song was my lackluster attempt to write a song like ‘All The Young Dudes’ by Mott The Hoople.”
The cinematic sweep of the “The Pills” is a prescription for a lot of ailments. Therapy might include swaying to and fro, singing along and maybe, just maybe, playing some air violin.
