Singer-songwriter Lisa Sonoda is a Bay Area native with an impressive online arsenal of cover songs — Feist, Mazzy Star, St. Vincent, Lykke Li, Of Montreal, Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey and Elliott Smith are among the artists whose work she has tackled in her home recordings. All of which serve as reference points for the two original songs the self-taught musician released last month, “Some Love” and “Never Could.” A filmmaker, painter and photographer who moved to L.A. after graduating from UC Irvine, Sonoda dives into the dream-pop world, her plaintive meditations probably most reminiscent of Hope Sandoval. Her original “Never Could” features the azure guitar textures of Adrian Garcia; like “Some Love,” it’s part of an EP Sonoda has in the works. A captivating beginning.
